Job Title: Performance-driven Parallel Software Research and Development Co-op
Job Description: In the future, we will be living in a world that is increasingly interconnected by complex and heterogeneous systems. By 2020, the amount of data stored worldwide will have grown to 44 zettabytes. Around 50 billion devices will be linked online.
However, operational technologies (OT) must get smarter enabling the convergence with information technologies (IT) bridging the digital divide. Hence, future Siemens products are increasingly based on the execution of advanced alogorithms (e.g., machine-learning) on one or many general-purpose accelerated (e.e., GPU, FPGA, DSP), or distributed (e.g., coulds) processors. These industrial applications require software systems that meet specific constraints and requirements of industrial domains (e.g., cost, performance, energy, size, latency, safety, real-time, data privacy, and environment).
Therefore, distributed and potentially heterogeneous processors will be the technology that forms the basis of future Siemens products. The technical question arising with tightly coupled parallel processing and dynamic behavior are big challenges for the entire company. In fact, writing parallel software becomes increasingly challenging. In particular, meeting performance expectations for programs running on today's complex hardware can require significant effort.
In this co-op, students will learn and apply parallel programming methods and new software technologies in industrial software development environments. Students will also learn how to manage these new challenges, for instance, regarding stability, real-time, and availability. Typically, students will work towards an innovation technology demonstrator at the end of their internship.
